A. Linen finish or embossed effects are a post printing and coating effect and is done in house.
Q. Why would you choose to use a white core over a grey core over a black core over a purple core etc?For a particular job given the choice?
A. White core is pure virgin art card stock and is used mainly for the Tarot and the promotional cards which requires bulk Black centered are the more preferred stock for the professional playing card stock. The other brown or grey centered stock usually available from China is actually the cheap duplex board with a coated paper.
Q. Which colors are the most difficult for you to work with or keep consistent throughout a run?
A. Technically and practically the most difficult colors to work on especially on the borders is the cyan (blue) and the mix between the cyan and the Magenta.
Q. 280 - 300 and the different coatings - What are what you consider to be your highest quality card coating and stock options - or combinations?
A. TThe permutation combination of this is based entirely on the requirement of the client. Clients often confuse thick stock with better quality and durability which is not so. 300 gsm need not have a thickness of just 30 microns it could be 32 microns or 28 microns depending on the bulk of the paper and the coating.Clients often opt for the 320 gsm plus to get better bulk( thickness) on the cards however the 320 GSM with a bulk of 29 to 30 is ideal for shuffling and handling the cards along with aqua coating. As far as the coatings are concerned there are quite a few requests for high slip with a combination of high gloss or matt with high slip and these contribute to the stiffness accordingly. UV coatings are quite popular with clients wanting high gloss and slip and can take the stiffness of the stock to another level.Linen embossing usually robs the strength of the fiber in the paper for stiffness and works better with the 320 GSM stock. To summarize the question the best combination would be 300 gsm along with UV gloss coating.Or The 320 GSM linen finish with the UV or Matt Aqua Coatings.
Q. C Design wise - black borders - what stock of yours do you suggest for cards with black borders (if any) and why?Or do you suggest - rather than a particular card stock - a particular coating for black borders?
A. Design wise you can choose either stock white centered or black centered it all depends on the coating and the suggested coating for dark borders is the high gloss or the UV coating..
Q. What can be done to minimize differences in card back color throughout a deck?
A. Differences in card backs are now at an all time low with the new machine however once can avoid the differences by having a white border. This is tantamount mostly and applies to the small runs in the larger runs of 10000 and above the differences are brought down to 99% which is very high standards in our industry.
Q. How many cards can have I have to a deck?
A. You could have 54 cards to a deck which is the normal count but, if you have more than 66 cards you can have the same in a 2 or more deck style packaging.
